Skydiving in Novosibirsk

This summer Russian skydivers have broken the national record for the largest connected free-fall formation when 186 people joined in the air. The team jumped out of ten planes at a height of 6,500 meters.

Generally, Russians love skydiving as much as the other extreme sports. Nowadays numerous airbases and flight clubs invite thrill-seekers to take a parachute jump or a trial flight with a coach.

Novosibirsky Aviaclub is in the list of clubs that offer entertainment of that kind. Located in Berdsk, not far from Novosibirsk, it occupies the whole Central Berdsk airfield.

It exists under the auspice of DOSAAF. DOSAAF (full name Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Fleet) - is a paramilitary sport organization, primarily concerned with fields related to weapons, automobiles and aviation in the Soviet Union.

The society was preserved in a number of post-Soviet Republics, e.g., in Russia and Belarus. The main goal of the society is "patriotic upbringing of the population". The paramilitary sports are developped to make Russians able to defend the Motherland in case of danger.

The Novosibirsky Club was officially launched on February 16, 1990. Their team is considered to be the strongest in the whole Siberia, they participated in numerous competitions in Italy, in Thailand, in Sweden, etc. In 1999 they took the 2nd place in the Skydiving World Cup.

First two years it was only skydiving club, but the founders with the coaches were always hunting for more. And soon their dreams came true. The first gliders appeared in the early 90s. Since 1995 the Novosibirsky Club helds The Russian Gliding Championship.

And here are the gliders themselves – the full name is a L13-Training & Instructional glider. The wingspan is 17 metres, wing/drag ratio: 28k.  So what's wing/drag ratio? Roughly speaking, it’s the number of kilometres a glider will take to come to the ground in calm weather conditions (without anabatic wind).

An aerator is a powered plane attached to the glider with a tow rope. When the 1000m altitude is reached, the aerator detaches and the glider goes into free flight.

Given the right conditions a glider can keep flying almost indefinitely, using naturally occurring updrafts.

The club team trains on Yak-52, Yak-55 and Yak-55M planes and then participates in different aerobatics' competitions in Russia.

Totally, the Novosibirsky Club cultivated 7 Masters of Sports of International Class and dozens of Candidate Masters of Sports.  More than 6000 teenagers have tried sky-jumping in this school.
