Here are some news headlines that appeared on popular online news portals in Russia on Knowledge Day (Sept. 2)—a holiday that marks the start of the new academic year for students. Behind the sensational headlines, lovers of literature found familiar scenes from Russian classics that had been adapted to the realities of modern life.

Having clicked on a news item, visitors were taken to a special portal where they could jump from the news story to the text of the literary original, which was available to read and download for free. The project was organized by the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications, the Russian Book Union and the advertising agency SLAVA.

What great works can you recognize in these news items? What other headlines can you think up that might come straight from the pages of Russia's literary masterpieces? Share your answers in the comments section.
