Skiing on the border of Asia and Europe

The view from the summit of Mount Arvyakryaz (1068 m), the Ural Mountains //On scaling the peak, climbers behold at their feet a wide valley dotted with villages. Most local residents work in the logging industry, but up in the mountains the roar of machinery is nowhere to be heard. It is as if civilization did not exist, only nature. The slopes of this mountain are so abundant with snow that without skis you'll be knee-deep, no waist-deep, in no time at all.

The Ural Mountains are a conventional boundary between Europe and Asia. They traverse Russia from north to south, moving from one climatic zone to the next. For many decades and in all seasons, tourists from all across the world have taken skiing trips in the Urals. In winter, the mildest climatic conditions are to be found in the Southern Urals, but even so be prepared for temperatures of -45°C and snowfalls that cut off all transport links.

Russian tourists are not just thrill seekers, but generally very interesting and intelligent people. It is not uncommon for there to be a light tome of Leo Tolstoy in someone's backpack.

An entire science lies behind winter hiking. How can one survive a week or two without hot water and heating? Tourists have it all worked out. In wintertime, there's one big tent for the whole group (8-12 people). Inside, a special camp stove is set up, providing so much heat that even in bitterly cold conditions inside the tent all you need is a sweater. Food is usually prepared over a campfire in a specially flattened pot.

-33°C//On a winter hike, sometimes even the simplest actions are difficult, especially at low temperatures. Care should always be taken to prevent the extremities from freezing. A sure-fire way to get warm even in deep-freeze conditions is to be active. Norwegian traveler and explorer Amundsen wrote that the only way to warm the body is to "keep moving."

In the southern Urals, even when everything is covered with a thick layer of winter snow, natural life goes on. The traces of birds and animals can always be seen in the snow. The local forests contain ample food. For example, rosehip berries — an exquisite delicacy.

Often the trees are covered with a thick layer of hoarfrost. Yes, yes, it’s hoarfrost! Snow could never wrap itself so neatly around every branch and knobble. At a certain height, the weather conditions are such that in the relatively balmy air the clouds leave their warm moisture in the trees, after which the frost does its job. As a result, the forest becomes fabulously white.

Warm human breath in hard frost also works wonders! Eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair all frost over — make sure to shake off those icicles in time.

A stroll along the plateau reveals the variety of nature’s crafted landscapes at different altitudes: in the lower reaches, untouched by clouds, everything seems black thanks to the dense forest; but higher up, all is whiter than white due to hoarfrost.

You might think that winter means lots of warm clothes, ergo heavy rucksacks all around. But no, backpacks contain only light bulky items, while heavier things are carried in special sleds. They attach to backpacks by means of a rope and glide effortlessly over the snow, so that the weight becomes almost unnoticeable. Tourists call them "bugs" — like obedient dogs, they amble along behind, but on descents and ascents they can show character.

On a hike, every food seems especially tasty. A simple mandarin seems tastier than any exotic fruit back home.

Happiness is simple: walking along, facing the sun, not a soul for tens of kilometers in every direction (except fellow trekkers), all essentials “riding” with you in your rucksack, no cares or troubles, and nature providing an almost inexhaustible supply of energy.

Good company is the bedrock of a pleasant journey. With decent, reliable people, everyday difficulties are easily overcome and simple gatherings around a campfire are better than any party.

The flora and fauna of the Urals vary dramatically depending on the exact region. The nature of the Southern Urals still harbors many interesting things for would-be explorers: a limitless palette of colors, the broadest possible array of sounds, and something so elusive that words fail to convey it.
