Militants became active in the North Caucasian Federal District in January, the federal district police department reported on Monday.

Eighteen terrorist crimes, among them 13 shooting incidents and five explosions, were committed in the reporting period. There were three clashes, and one terrorist act was prevented in Dagestan. The militants killed four persons and injured one, the report said.

The police held 101 effective searches in the North Caucasus in January. Twenty-six militants, among them eight ringleaders, were eliminated, the report said.

Twenty-two militants were detained in the federal district last month.

Three bases of militants were destroyed and 17 caches containing terrorist means and food were found in the North Caucasian Federal District in the reporting period.

The police seized four grenade launchers, 27 submachine guns, 6 rifles, 3 carbines, 29 pistols, a hunting rifle, 4 sown-off hunting guns, 42 grenades, 10 grenade launcher projectiles, 84 munitions, 9 mines, 20 handmade explosive devices, 11.9 kilograms of explosives, and more than 4,500 shells. Residents surrendered 1 submachine gun, 2 pistols, 1 grenade and 110 shells.
