There were no Russians among those killed in an explosion not far from the Russian Embassy in Damascus on Thursday, an embassy source told Interfax, citing "preliminary information."

According to Syrian state television, the powerful explosion, which occurred about 300 meters from the Russian Embassy and the headquarters of the ruling Baath party in the city center, claimed at least 31 lives.

The powerful explosion in the center of Damascus damaged the Russian Embassy building, an Embassy representative said earlier.

"All we can say so far is that window glass is smashed," he said.

The diplomats will find out whether the building sustained bigger damage, he said. The Embassy is working in spite of the incident, the source said.
