Roscosmos approves next ISS crews, backups

An interdepartmental commission in charge of the formation of crews of spaceships and the International Space Station (ISS) has evaluated candidates, the Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) press service said.

Roscosmos head Oleg Ostapenko presided over the commission's meeting.

The commission advised the Cosmonaut Training Center to include Mukhtar Aimakhanov in the Roscosmos astronaut crew upon his examination by the Main Medical Commission.

In addition, it formed the 43rd, 44th, 45th, 46th, 47th and 48th crews of the International Space Station, the 18th visiting crew and their backups.

The commission listed amongst 43rd/44th crew backups Alexei Ovchinin (Roscosmos, 43rd/44th crew engineer, Soyuz TMA-M spaceship commander), Sergei Volkov (Roscosmos, 43rd/44th/45th crew engineer - a year-long mission, Soyuz TMA-M engineer) and Jeffrey Williams (NASA, 43rd/44th/45th /46th crew engineer - a year-long mission, Soyuz TMA-M engineer).

Oleg Skripochka (Roscosmos, 45th /46th crew/18th visiting crew engineer, Soyuz TMA-M commander), Thomas Pesquet (the European Space Agency, ISS crew/18th visiting crew engineer, Soyuz TMA-M engineer) were named 45th /46th crew/18th visiting crew backups.

A space tourist - a member of the visiting crew - has yet to be chosen, Roscosmos said.

The 47th /48th crew will consist of Alexei Ovchinin (Roscosmos, 47th /48th crew engineer, Soyuz TMA-M commander), Oleg Skripochka (Roscosmos, 47th /48th crew engineer, Soyuz TMA-M engineer) and Jeffrey Williams (NASA 47th crew engineer, 48th crew commander, Soyuz TMA-M engineer).
