Russia launches official Twitter account

The Russian Foreign Ministry has launched the country's official Twitter account: @Russia. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the announcement during a press briefing on Dec. 24. 

"It is planned that the new resource, created with the support of the Russia Beyond the Headlines editorial office, will talk about the main non-political - cultural, sporting, scientific-technological, humanitarian, economical - events in Russia, as well as events in which Russia participates abroad," said Zakharova.

She remarked that many countries' foreign ministries already have similar accounts and that there is nothing "surprising about this." 

"Now we have decided to tell the world firsthand about the most interesting things in our wonderful, diverse and unique country, about its fantastic people," she said.
