10 wooden houses that remain in Moscow (PHOTOS)

There are still approximately 500 wooden houses in Moscow, each has its own history and architectural peculiarities. Wooden houses adjoining tall apartment buildings are scattered across various areas of Moscow. We made a visual guide for 10 of them. / House on 6 Novozavodskaya Str.

One-storied wooden mansion at 5/2 Sutinskiy Lane. This house was built in the 19th century. It has lavishly decorated columns and even the stuccos are made from wood.

Wooden mansion at 47 Shepkin Str. Famous Russian actor Mikhail Shepkin spent the last 4 years of his life here. Now it is a museum dedicated to him.

A simple reconstructed wooden house with an annex in the modernist style at 8/1 Pervy Kazachiy Lane.

6 Novozavodskaya Str. A wooden house stands on the territory of the Church of the Intercession at Fili. It looks especially uncommon in front of Moscow City skyscrapers.

House-estate of Russian writer Leo Tolstoy at 21/1 Leo Tolstoy Str. He lived here from 1882 till 1901, and wrote about 100 works in the house. Now it is the Leo Tolstoy Khamovniki Memorial Estate and is open to visitors.

House number 5 on Malyi Vasilievsky Lane is a monument of 19th-century architecture. It is a typical example of planned development after the huge fire that destroyed Moscow in 1812. Every wooden building that remains from the early 19th century is a very rare discovery. Not many wooden buildings survived the blaze of 1812 during the Napoleonic war, and the fact that some still exist in the 21st century is a miracle.

Krutitskoye Town Church, a historical monument at the crossing of Krutitskaya Str. and Pervy Krutitskyi Lane, founded in the 18th century, first as a monastery, then as an episcopal residence. Since 1991 it has been a town church for the Russian patriarch.

7/4 Goncharnaya Str. 19th-century wooden mansion. There is a popular bar, a restaurant and a concert place, so there is a chance to see it from the inside: have a drink, walk through the many different rooms, and observe central Moscow from the balcony.

4 Bolshoy Predtechenskiy Lane. A green house with windows decorated with white wooden nalichniks (traditional hand-carved wooden window frames). It is situated on the territory of the Presnya Historical Memorial Museum, devoted to modern Russian history.
