Russian songs translated: ‘Bear Lullaby’ (Sing with us!)

One of the most famous Russian lullabies was actually originally performed by a “mama bear”!

In 1969, a Soviet animated film titled 'Umka' about a polar bear cub won the hearts of the whole USSR. And especially because of a tender lullaby that polar bear mother sings to her cub.

‘Колыбельная медведицы’ – ‘Bear lullaby’ 

Ложкой снег мешая,

Ночь идет большая,

Что же ты, глупышка, не спишь?

Stirring the snow with a spoon, 

The long night is coming,

So, why aren’t you sleeping, silly baby? 

 

Спят твои соседи –

Белые медведи,

Спи скорей и ты, малыш.

Your neighbors, the polar bears,

Are sleeping,

So, you too, sleep quickly, baby. 

 

Мы плывем на льдине,

Как на бригантине

По седым суровым морям.

We are sailing on an ice floe,

Like on a brigantine,

Across the gray, harsh seas.

 

И всю ночь соседи -

Звездные медведи

Светят дальним кораблям…

And all night our neighbors, 

The star bears,

Are shining for distant ships...
