India is happy to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the near future and hopes for fruitful cooperation, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday.
India and Pakistan are expected to sign preliminary membership memorandum at the SCO summit in Tashkent on June 23-24 and will become full-fledged members at the 2017 SCO summit in Kazakhstan.
"India is glad to be a member of the SCO & looks forward to fruitful outcomes particularly in the field of economic cooperation through SCO," Modi said via his official Twitter account.
Cooperation with Central Asia is of great importance for India, he added.
The SCO is a political, economic and military alliance that includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
