Sakha, Yakutia (Republic)
If the moderate continental winter with its light frosts does not surprise you anymore, then the time has come to visit the champion of temperature records - Yakutia!
In winter, real northern frosts rage here and the temperature can drop below -50 degrees Celsius. It is worth dressing up thoroughly and going for a brisk walk around the city: go to the local market or even take a dog sled ride, feeling like a real polar explorer. After such an adventure, frost on your eyelashes and a frosty blush are guaranteed!
Didn’t have enough snow and ice? Then it’s time to go to the Museum of the History of Permafrost and take a trip down to the ice layers of the Earth’s crust. In the depths of the underground laboratory, the temperature is kept at a constant sub-zero to keep the fragile ecosystem and artifacts of unprecedented age in their natural state as long as possible.
❄️ For permafrost, its secrets and treasures, we go to Yakutsk and the museum of the Institute of Permafrost Science of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Be sure to visit its laboratory: there are truly impressive ancient artifacts stored here, such as an almost completely preserved mammoth!
💎 Take a walk in winter Yakutsk and visit local open-air markets. When you feel the frost has begun to bite too hard, check out the museum - the Treasury of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), where large gold nuggets, diamonds of exceptional purity, rare gems and amazing jewelry and small form sculptures made of precious metals and mammoth bone are kept.
🐕 Go on a polar fairy tale or find yourself in the world of Jack London’s stories by taking a dog sled ride through the virgin winter nature of Yakutia.
😎 And finally, let’s remember the most important thing you’ll need to take with you on your travels: a thick winter Alaska jacket, waterproof pants, warm shoes and a good mood!
