Lipetsk Region is known for its black earth and mineral waters. Yes, yes, it was here that, in 1805, by decree of Alexander I, the ‘Lipetsk Mineral Waters’ resort was created. The old pump-room with healing water still stands in Lipetsk’s Nizhny park.
In the city of Yelets, you can plunge into the merchant culture of Old Russia. There are wooden houses with carved architraves and churches and the measured life of a cozy province. Lipetsk Region also has a village by the name of Leo Tolstoy. It used to be a small railway station named Astapovo, infamous for the fact that it was here that 82-year-old Leo Tolstoy died. And of course, one of the loudest modern attractions is the Kudykina Gora park, where the real fire-breathing Zmey Gorynych (a dragon from Russian fairy tales).
