Harvest grapes

Crimea (Republic)

If you have already visited all the beaches of Crimea, it’s time to go down into the ancient dungeons, where the largest collection of wines in the world is collected. We are talking, of course, about the famous ‘Massandra’ winery.

This one of the oldest and most titled wine producers, inviting guests to get acquainted with the legacy of the founding father of Crimean winemaking - Lev Golitsyn.

The vaults of ‘Massandra’ contain truly unique samples; for example, Sherry De La Frontera, harvested in 1775, or ‘Lacrima Christi’ nutmeg wine from 1892, which was very much appreciated by Nicholas II.

And, if you are lucky enough to be here in the fall, then, in addition to the tour and tasting, you will be offered to participate in the harvest of the same grapes, which will later turn into one of the 60 varieties of wine produced at the winery. It is not every day that you get the opportunity to visit the vineyards stretching for tens of kilometers from Sudak to Foros!

One of ‘Massandra’s most popular drinks is the dessert liqueur white wine ‘White Red Stone Muscat’. It was conceived in 1944 and owes its name to white Muscat grapes that grew near the Red Stone rock in Gurzuf. This wine is aged in oak barrels for at least two years, due to which it acquires a rich aroma and noble taste with citrus notes.

‘Massandra’s Muscat was awarded three times with international Grand Prix cups and received more than 20 gold medals for the highest quality.

How to harvest?

When you feel that the Crimean Sea and the sun have given you the strength to discover something new, go on excursions to the ‘Massandra’ winery!

There, guests are offered an impressive number of different options for how to have an interesting time: from traveling along the historical route of Lev Golitsyn to tasting elite wines in the very heart of their production, accompanied by live music!

If you are lucky enough to go there in late August or early September, try yourself as a wine grower. Grab a panama hat, dress comfortably and spend the day harvesting the new crop. Experienced berry pickers are happy to share their knowledge of the vine with you. You can buy a ticket for such an informative master class on ‘Massandra’s official website.

We recommend that you check with the excursion department in advance about the availability of places: at the height of the tourist season, there are really many people who want to get to know the wine cellars and vineyards of ‘Massandra’ better! And, be sure to treat yourself to a bottle of marvelous drink after: this is both a memorable souvenir and a great excuse to arrange your own tasting anywhere in the world!
