Chuvashia (Republic)

Some historians believe that originally ‘Chuvash’ was not nationality, but the social status of the people in the Kazan Khanate, which ruled the territory. Kazan and the modern republic of Tatarstan are the eastern neighbors of Chuvashia.

The capital of Cheboksary is located on the picturesque bank of the Volga River (which is up to 4 km wide here!). In the center of the city is the Cheboksary Bay - it’s the most beautiful and favorite part of Cheboksary according to the locals. However, back in Soviet times, instead of the bay there was a historical part of the city, which had to be flooded during the construction of the hydroelectric power plant.
