As many as five ranges of the Caucasus Mountains pass through small Kabardino-Balkaria. There are as many as seven five-thousander mountains, as well as the highest peak both in Russia and in Europe - the two-headed Elbrus (5,642 m). Also in Kabardino-Balkaria is one of the most beautiful wonders of nature - the Chegem waterfalls.
Historically, there were two regions: Kabarda and Balkaria, which united in the 1920s after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. The basis of the population is made up of two different nationalities - Kabardians and Balkars and both of their languages are official in the republic, along with Russian.
