Nenets family
Sergey Anisimov/Anadolu Agency/Getty ImagesWinter in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Region) is long and lingering and summer is short and long-awaited. Sometimes, there is a lot of sunshine, sometimes, none at all - on a polar night, the light hardly lasts for several hours a day. But, you can often see the Northern Lights, which the locals consider an almost normal phenomenon.
The capital of the district is Salekhard, one of the oldest cities of the Far North. It is the only city in the world located at the latitude of the Arctic Circle. Therefore, the main symbol of Salekhard for many of its residents is an unusual ‘The 66th parallel’ monument.
By the way, on the outskirts of Salekhard is the Obdorsky burg - it was here that one of the first Russian settlements of the conquerors of the North, founded by Cossacks in the territory of Siberia in 1595, was located.
