Horsewoman on duty: Meet Russia's most outstanding post officer

Maria Rubtsova exchanged the hustle and bustle of the big city for a career as a post officer in a small village.

A wooden house and a piece of land in the village, horses, dogs, and a modest job at the local post office — probably seems like a boring lifestyle. But after watching Maria Rubtsova's story, you might want to think twice.

At the age of 23, Maria decided to leave Moscow and settle in a small village of Maryino, 100km north of Moscow.. She is probably Russia's most unusual post officer: every day she stuns the locals by delivering mail on horseback. "At first I was a pure sensation. My appearance evokes delight and childish joy. Someone said it was the first time they’d seen a horse in the village for 40 years,” Maria told RBTH.

Maria finds much pleasure in simple, orderly rural life, which in the age of digital communications might seem outdated. "The fewer people, the better. Here I have much more time for hobbies. There’s far more creative freedom here,” says Maria.
