Russia, Laos consider direct flights

Russian visitors to the Southeast Asian country usually travel via Thailand

Russia and its Cold War-era ally Laos are looking at the idea of starting direct or charter flights, according to recent media reports.

Russian ambassador to Laos Mikhail Baranov told the state-run Lao News Agency that such an initiative would enhance the friendly relations between the countries and expand trade and tourism.

At the moment, Thailand is used as the main transit point for any traffic between Russia and Laos. There are also no charter services to Laos from any Russian city.

Laos was an important ally of the Soviet Union during the Cold War era and several specialists from the USSR helped develop the infrastructure of the country in the 1960s and 70s.
