Russia, ASEAN mull business summit in Kuala Lumpur in November

Sergey Lavrov calls for greater integration between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Union

A new summit of top business executives from Russia and ASEAN nations may be held in November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was cited by TASS as saying at a Russia-ASEAN ministerial conference.

“Business missions to Southeast Asian countries have become regular and the plans for the rest of this month feature missions to Malaysia and Brunei,” Lavrov said, according to the report. “Currently we’re working on a new Russia-ASEAN business summit that will be held in Kuala Lumpur in November.”

Lavrov also invited ASEAN countries to consider greater integration with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).  “An agreement on a free trade zone between the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEU) and Vietnam was signed in May," Lavrov was cited by TASS as saying. “We’re ready to make it a pilot project for a general liberalization (of trade and investment) between the EAEU and ASEAN."

Lavrov also called on Russia and ASEAN to cooperate in countering common threats such as money laundering, the financing of terrorism, drug-trafficking and cybercrime, according to the report.
