Highway patrol police officers have seized 500 kg of caviar in a hearse that they stopped for speeding.

The incident took place in the Khabarovsk Territory in Russia's Far East in the morning of Oct. 27, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing Interior Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Alexeyeva.

The caviar was hidden in the coffin and covered with wreaths, and the driver first told the police he was transporting the body of a dead woman. As the officers were writing out a speeding ticket, they asked the driver to open the casket compartment for inspection.

However, there was no dead body in the compartment. Instead, the officers found plastic containers with caviar, presumably from sturgeon, hidden inside the coffin and under the wreaths.

Two detained funeral home employees, who were in the hearse, said that the coffin had been put into the vehicle by unknown people. They had promised the driver and his partner of 25,000 rubles ($400) for transportation.
